The .io domain is the official top-level domain (TLD) of the British Indian Ocean Territory, and its registration is available to any individual, company, or organization. This TLD is very popular for both business and personal use, making it an excellent choice for websites or businesses targeting this territory or technology projects, where this TLD is widely recognized.
To register a .io domain, any natural or legal person may do so. The domain name must be between 2 and 29 characters. In case of disputes, the WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organization) policy applies.
Regarding transfers, providing the transfer code and the associated nameservers is mandatory. The transfer process automatically includes domain renewal.
Renewals are possible if the domain is within its renewal period and are carried out for 1 year. The renewal period begins 35 days before the domain’s expiration date, and it is recommended to renew before expiration to avoid domain suspension.
For technical updates, changes to nameservers may take up to 2 days to be fully completed.
In the event of expiration, the domain can be restored, although the cost of this process does not include domain renewal.
